Così Dio, volendo mostrare con maggiore evidenza agli eredi della promessa l’immutabilità del suo proposito, intervenne con un giuramento, affinché mediante due cose immutabili, nelle quali è impossibile che Dio abbia mentito, troviamo una potente consolazione, noi, che abbiamo cercato il nostro rifugio nell’afferrare saldamente la speranza che ci era messa davanti.

[Ebrei 6:17-18]

Quando Dio ha fatto le sue promesse all’umanità, lo ha fatto facendo un giuramento non a noi, ma a Se stesso. Perché? La Bibbia racconta la nostra costante infedeltà in contrasto con il Suo amore immutabile. Dio non sta guardando la nostra capacità per mantenere questo accordo, ma la Sua. Non potevamo liberarci, così Egli è venuto come uomo per liberarci. Dio è l’iniziatore e il garante di questo accordo. Questo dovrebbe darci una grande speranza! Dio ha promesso di essere il nostro Dio e ascoltare le nostre preghiere attraverso Gesù Cristo. Questo non è basato su di noi, ma su Gesù. Corriamo dunque da Lui oggi stesso.

Believing God’s Promises

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. [Hebrews 6:17-18]

When God made His promises to mankind, He did so by making an oath not to us, but to Himself. Why? The Bible chronicles our constant unfaithfulness in contrast to His unchanging love. God is not looking at our abilities to keep this agreement, but His own. We couldn’t deliver ourselves, so He came as a man to deliver us. God is the initiator and the guarantor of this agreement. This should give us great hope! God has promised to be our God and hear our prayers through Jesus Christ. This is not based upon you, but upon Jesus. Run to Him today.

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. [Romans 5:5]

As we go along in life, we find that hope may be the most important trait that we can cultivate, for hope is an expectation of the future that determines how we live today. The mistakes that we have made can make it easy to lose hope, but God brings to us good news: we are more dysfunctional than we want to admit, but we are more loved than we could ever dream. This reality will not disappoint us when we believe the gospel that is offered to us in Jesus Christ.

It doesn’t take many people, but God is best experienced in community. There are people who say, “I don’t need anyone – it’s me and Jesus”, but that is not what Jesus taught. The God who is in all places has promised to let us know His unusual presence when we gather with other followers of Christ. This doesn’t need to happen on Sunday morning – it can happen during a work break, in a restaurant, a picnic or a family’s house – during any day of the week. Community is one of the wonderful gifts that God has given us to know Jesus.

The power of faith is that it takes us toward the future with confidence. Since none of us can know what tomorrow holds, faith becomes a powerful friend, for faith holds back the anxieties that can flood our soul. If you find yourself anxious today, take a moment and stop and refresh your perspective. Hope in the unseen can strengthen your heart to face tomorrow.
